Municipality of Chefchaouen

Located in northwest Morocco, Chefchaouen is an old fort town with a rich cultural history. Referred to as the “blue pearl of Morocco”, Chefchaouen is known for its picturesque blue buildings that sit against the lush green Rif Mountains. The cobblestoned streets are lined with artisans selling leather products, woven textiles and intricate pottery items among other handmade goods.  Visitors can sample a variety of local dishes, such as a tagine or couscous, or relax with mint tea at one of the many tea houses. Chefchaouen is also a nature-lovers dream, offering pristine wilderness with hiking trails that lead to the Akchour Waterfalls and other unique sites. The city is also committed to the preservation of a number of plant and animal species, and several tree-planting campaigns focused on the use of endogenous plants, are scheduled annually.

For history lovers, the Medina (one of the most beautiful in Morocco) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing Moorish architecture with Andalusian influence. The Kasbah – now turned museum – is another must-see when in Chefchaouen, and boasts the Center for Research and Andalusian Studies, an art gallery, a former prison, a magnificent garden and panoramic views from one of several watch towers. The city experiences a typical Mediterranean climate, with a rainy and cold winter, and a hot and humid summer, making the best time to visit between May and September.
